Début janvier 2018 et tout le long de l'année, Jens Lekman et la chanteuse Annika Norlin (Hello Saferide, Säkert !) ont entretenu une correspondance musicale s’envoyant à tour de rôle et chaque mois une chanson. "Annika and I first met ten years ago. From her first record I felt we had something in common, the music and the stories, but it wasn’t until 2008 when she released More Modern Short Stories with her band Hello Saferide that I felt :
1. I need to step up my songwriting
2. I should be friends with this person.
I was living in New York at the time, I was heartbroken and miserable. One day I looked at her website and saw that she was looking for someone to help set up a show in New York. Normally I would’ve hesitated to reach out because of fear of being rejected (Sorry Jens, but your music sucks so I don’t think I want you to help me set up a show) but I was in a state where the worst had already happened and so what harm could it do to just send an email ?"

'2018 seemed like a good year to do that: it’s election year in Sweden. Will Trump blow something up ? Will a comet hit the earth ? Will either of us go on a fun cruise ? We actually have no idea what this project will end up being except for that we decided to use one instrument only. Which is something we may or may not stick to. The recordings will be pretty low key but because we are trying to impress each other it might actually turn out to be worth listening to." (Annika Norlin).

Ce projet assez simple et humble à la base s’est transformé en un disque. Un disque comme un roman épistolaire. Une histoire d’amitié, de vie, de ses grands et petits moments (ils y parlent d’épuisement, de nostalgie, de la solitude ressentie lorsqu’on s’installe dans un nouvel endroit, des liens humains, d’harcèlement, d’anxiété liée au changement climatique, de valises prêtes à partir en voyage, des cœurs en deuil, des films cultes, des échecs, des boutiques de cosmétiques, du capitalisme...) sous la forme de douze chansons folk.

Quelques cordes ont été ajoutées (dans de beaux arrangements) aux versions originales. Des versions qui méritent l’écoute également, plus brutes mais pas moins belles, et que l’on pourra retrouver sur le site internet de l’album. Cette correspondance est une belle expérience, intéressante car elle permet de regarder deux musiciens s’apprivoiser l'un l'autre, devenir intime, voir ce qui se passe dans leur vie, plus ou moins en temps réel et se "rapprocher aussi, dans la signification de leurs œuvres" comme le disait Julien Gracq de la correspondance entre Albert Camus et René Char.

Le résultat douze chansons comme autant de petits moments de bonheur et quelques un plus précieux encore ("Who Really Needs Who", "Showering in Public", "Not Because It’s Easy, but Because It’s Hard", "Revenge of the Nerds", "Failure"). La pop du suédois est toujours aussi poétique et touchante. Il en va de même pour celle d’Annika Norlin. Vraiment un beau disque, à écouter seul ou entre amis.
